CELSI Frontiers Seminar on the impact of technological and environmental transformations on workers and the role of adult learning

April 7, 2025

At the last CELSI Frontiers Seminar, the CELSI team discussed the impact of technological and environmental transformations on workers and the role of adult learning, with Lucia Mýtna Kureková.

On Friday, April 4, CELSI’s research fellow Lucia Mýtna Kureková presented a research paper, co-authored by Miroslav Štefánik a Ivana Studená, titled "The Role of Social Dialogue in Enhancing Adult Learning Participation and Tackling Inequality."

Their research explores the significant impact of intensifying technological and environmental transformations on workers and companies - especially those who are lower-educated, older, in jobs at high risk of computerization or automation, or working on a temporary basis.

The study finds that social dialogue, especially trade union density, significantly improves access to adult learning across Europe. However, it often benefits those already more likely to participate, such as higher-educated workers. Vulnerable groups like low-skilled or high-risk workers still face barriers.

The paper recommends stronger roles for employer associations and more targeted trade union support to reduce these inequalities.
